Impact of Typhoon Yagi on Hainan's Tilapia Supply

Industry Update: Impact of Typhoon Yagi on Hainan's Tilapia Supply

The recent devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi in Hainan has significantly disrupted the tilapia supply chain. The typhoon inflicted severe damage, particularly on power infrastructure, affecting both fish farms and production facilities. While electricity has been intermittently restored, ongoing power outages and repair works are expected for the next few days. Full restoration is anticipated by next week, contingent on the completion of comprehensive maintenance on power supply stations.

Our team has been closely monitoring the situation and collecting updates directly from farmers in the primary farming regions. Unfortunately, the impact on fish supply is substantial, with available volumes dropping to only 25% of pre-typhoon levels for the upcoming week. Several key factors are contributing to the current shortage:

factors are contributing to the current shortage:

  1.  Decreased Fish Volume: The total fish available for the last quarter has decreased by approximately 50% due to the typhoon. Farmers were forced to harvest fish early, even those not yet mature, to prevent further losses due to power outages and the inability to maintain oxygen levels in ponds. Many of the larger fish (above 500 grams) have already been harvested, leaving smaller fish in the ponds.
  2. Slow Recovery of Fish Growth: During the power outages, farmers reduced feeding to maintain water quality, resulting in thinner fish. With power restored, farmers are now prioritizing growth and are reluctant to sell smaller fish prematurely.
  3. Health Concerns: Despite efforts to preserve their stock, farmers have experienced losses due to high temperatures and stress on the fish. Increased use of medications to combat disease has further delayed the availability of fish that meet the quality standards for the U.S. market.

The Current challenges

Given these circumstances, we expect delays of 1-2 months for most orders, depending on the fish sizes required. We are continuously revising our shipment schedules and working diligently to fulfill orders as soon as possible. However, the overall volume for the remainder of the year will be reduced due to the 50% decrease in fish supply. We understand the challenges this may cause for your business and are committed to supporting you through this difficult period. If you wish to cancel or adjust any orders, please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate your requests. Thank you for your continued support and understanding during this time. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves.
